This Friday, the Raider Rumbler Newspaper will distribute its volume 12, issue 1 print paper to classes during advocate, free of charge. This marks their return after a five-year break. There will be 1,000 copies available for distribution, and a few copies will be placed in the front office and library.
This edition features eight pages with 12 stories, and spotlights 40 students and staff. The inspiration for the design focuses on a bold, revitalizing look. The paper covers a variety of categories including staff editorials, features, news, sports and entertainment.
The print newspaper has been a tradition since 2008, but stopped during COVID-19. It is accessible to everyone regardless of internet access or technological skills. It strengthens the sense of community, allows the spotlight of stories, celebrates achievements and documents what is going on through real time.
The newspaper class had various staff meetings to discuss ideas and what they wanted in the issue. Along with staff meetings, there were media days where they reached out to local businesses to sell advertisements to pay for the print newspaper. Over 100 businesses were either called or emailed. However, they were unable to sell any newspaper ads due to businesses not having the budget or reaching their limit for monetary donations for the quarter.
To fund the first issue, the newspaper used $1,000 from the yearbook budget to print through Community Impact. However, for future issues, the newspaper staff will need to sell at least eight business ads.
They hope to have the next issue released in mid April. With a bold and clear vision, the Raider Rumbler staff is determined to reclaim the past, and to reinvent the future of student journalism.
