Raider Way and Woodview Drive were originally expected to end in the summer of 2024. However, as of Feb. 21 according to the city of Leander, Woodview Drive is scheduled to be completed in July 2025 with Raider Way’s timeline still uncertain, causing the annual homecoming parade to kick off into a new route than usual.
The ongoing construction forced students to make adjustments to their daily routine by waking up earlier than they would with normal traffic. However, Raiders did not hesitate to come out and show their support in the student parking lot in the midst of chaotic traffic construction.
In addition, students have been voicing the struggles of having to bike to school due to the late buses caused by ongoing traffic. At least ⅓ of students, depending on the class, are late to their 1st periods daily due to delayed buses, and traffic.
The City of Leander held a “Amendment 4 Kickoff Meeting” where they first introduced the plan for Raider Way and Woodview Drive on Nov. 11, 2020.
Three years later, on June 20, 2023, they put out a bid for companies to take the construction job. Construction for the road began on Aug. 15, 2023. Officials put out an estimate that it “may take up to two years to complete.”
This past August, the project entered its second year. Delays persisted which raised concern due to discomfort with the traffic through the students, parents and staff members.
Current one-way roads require all drivers to detour into woodview drive and exit raider way.
According to the city of Leander, the previous one-way road is planned to be extended into a three-lane road “with curb, gutter, drainage, street light, sidewalk, crosswalk and bicycle lane improvements.”
This three-lane road will assist with pedestrian safety and vehicle flow during school-related activities for both Rouse High School and Wiley Middle School.
The last update on the construction was on Oct. 9 of 2024. According to community impact, “Raider Way [and] Woodview Drive [are] expected to open two-way traffic by Spring break.”
