Winnie the Pooh’s eccentric characters show having flaws is okay

The new Winnie the Pooh movie is targeted toward younger kids, but I found it utterly adorable. However, I realized something I had never noticed as a child: all of the characters in Winnie the Pooh have some sort of mental disorder or issue.

Christopher Robin is a schizophrenic, Pooh has some sort of eating disorder; he’s always hungry. Piglet has Pantophobia – the fear of everything, Eeyore is majorly depressed and Roo is just a brat. Kanga is a bit of a control freak, and Rabbit has anger issues. To top it off, Owl is a know-it-all jerk, and Tigger has ADHD.

The fact that every single one of the characters in this beloved children’s show has an issue certainly sends a message about the messages we receive from movies in general. Winnie the Pooh is seemingly the most harmless show out of all of them; yet if you really think about it, it’s not what it seems. I think part of the reason this occurs is because of the characters themselves; that’s how they were written.

Although the fact that there are so many underlying messages in a seemingly innocent show seems bad, I think there is a positive aspect of it. I think the producers were trying to get the message across that not everyone is perfect. Even though we might all have our issues, we can still live together in harmony, accepting each other just the way we are.
