The Raiders brought home their first varsity win in school history, Aug. 26 against Liberty Hill with a final score of 21–0.
“This doesn’t change our season goal, but it definitely felt good to get a win under our belt,” head coach Joshua Mann said. “Our goal is still to play unselfishly and do the impossible.”
The players worked incredibly hard for this moment, attending practices twice a day since the beginning of July. This is the first year to have seniors.
“We became a team this year,” said senior quarterback Michael Botello who completed 7 of 12 passes for 203 yards. “We fight for each other and the fellowship of the team brought us this win.”
The Raiders scored three times, scoring touchdowns in each of the first three quarters. Liberty Hill fumbled the ball three times and the defense kept the Panthers out of the end zone, even in the final seconds. After the game, the team shook hands with Liberty Hill and then lined up on the field, arms linked together in a moment of solidarity.
“That’s why we coach high school football,” Mann said. “It’s awesome seeing their faces when they win a game.”
Raiders will play back-to-back away games Bryan Rudder, Sept. 2 and Hendrickson, Sept. 9 at 7:30 p.m.
“We’re hoping to go to playoffs we know a lot of big teams have been there,” defensive lineman Lucky Torres said. “And we’re definitely hoping to be up there with them.”
