Senior places in Sculpture Contest

Art student Victoria Gallo earned second place in the LISD Earth Day Sculpture Contest, which made her the only Rouse student to place for the Individual Sculpture category.

“I was ecstatic when I heard I had gotten 2nd place,” said Gallo. “The first thing I thought was that the money would go to my meal plan.”

Gallo’s sculpture took her around 20 hours to complete and used several different materials, including recycled materials, rocks, sand, wood, moss, and faux flowers.

“It was supposed to tell a story of how humans throw away trash,” said Gallo, “and flowers can’t live off of trash, so we have to put faux flowers on top. It means that we need to watch what we throw away.”

Gallo further demonstrated the message of her sculpture by using recyclable material she found outside on her sculpture.

“All the trash that I used was actually found outside,” said Gallo. “I went outside and picked up every little piece of trash that I could. It shows that we really need to watch what’s all being thrown out because real flowers can’t live off of trash.”
