Building Up The Community

Elizabeth Watson, Staffer

Building a better community is what Habitat for Humanity is all about. Currently they have 14 members, but all are allowed to join in their mission to end homelessness and build safer homes for our community.

While on site you learn many things about how a house is built, you get to talk to the owners and learn their story and what they have been through to get to this point in their life.

The most influential project I have taken the most knowledge from is the builds,” president Brooke Mckinnon said. “You get to meet the people who work behind the scenes in Habitat, and the joy they get in working for Habitat.”

A project they are bringing back from last year is Shack-A-Thon. It is an event where people bring wooden pallets, cardboard boxes, and get to make their own shack to sleep in for the night.

“It may not sound like much but it is a blast.” Mckinnon said.

They will talk about an upcoming builds, restorations, and other events they could possibly participate in their next meeting.

“The project I wish I could do all the time is the builds! Right now we only do them once a month so I would like to get out there more often.” Mckinnon said.

They will be having a meeting on November 2, so don’t miss it. There is a fee of $10 and you have to be 16 or older to participate in builds.
