All Grown up?
It isn’t easy juggling real adult responsibilities. But we’re here to help you with some of the basics.
This is part of our series on how to be an adult
Driver’s permit:
First, you need to pass the classroom component of Driver’s Education. You can take Driver’s Ed at Austin Driving School and Longhorn Driving School or take an online course at your own pace with sites like Aceable.com or Driverseducation101.com. Prices vary from $100-$300.
Bring the needed paperwork to the Department of Motor Vehicles when getting your permit, including proof of your identity, Social Security number, residency and school enrollment.
Study everything you learn in Driver’s Ed, you need more than the rules of the road. A good portion of the test focuses on drugs and alcohol. The test is taken on a computer and you have to pay $16 to be able to take it. There are 30 questions in total and you must get at least 21 correct in order to pass.
You have to be aware that license pictures never turn out well. As soon as you look at the camera, they take the picture. There is no fixing your hair or getting your good side.
If you wear glasses, bring them, they give you an eye exam. If you do not have glasses and fail the exam, they will tell you that you must get a pair and wear them in order to drive.
Driver’s license:
- Submit a completed application at the DMV.
- Bring driver’s education certificate.
- Bring proof of identity
- Bring proof of your Social Security number
- Bring two documents proving Texas residency or lawful presence in the country.
- A completed Verification of Enrollment and Attendance (get this from the school)
- Pay the $25 new driver’s license fee
- Pass the knowledge exam and driving test
- And one last very important thing you need to know about the DMV, is that whenever you go, be prepared to wait. There’s always a line and the process is often slow. Good luck!
