10 fun movies to watch this summer
This summer when you’re laying on the couch because it’s absolutely too hot outside, and you’re looking for some quality entertainment, check out these 10 comedic and fun movies.
The Goonies, 1985
One of the ultimate summer movies, The Goonies features a group of kids searching for a pirate’s treasure to save their parents’ homes. Mikey Walsh (Sean Astin), his brother Brand (Josh Brolin) and their band of friends trek through an underground maze of booby traps while a family of crooks chases after them.
Bee Movie, 2007
In this animated film, Barry the Bee (Jerry Seinfeld) flies out of the hive for the first time to realize the humans have been stealing honey from the bees for centuries. Along the way he befriends a human, Vanessa (Renee Zellweger), to help him fight for the bees and stop humans from stealing the honey and destroying the earth. This a super cute family movie and it’s been a personal favorite of mine since the first time I watched it. Buzz.
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, 1986
Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) has a skill for skipping class. Throughout the movie Ferris plays sick for the day so that he can go on a wild adventure with his girlfriend and best friend. In a borrowed Ferrari, the three trek all over Chicago while his principal, Mr. Rooney (Jeffery Jones) is determined to catch him. Everyone loves Ferris and you will too after seeing this ’80s high school comedy.
Bride Wars, 2009
Since they were little girls, Emma (Anne Hathaway) and Liv (Kate Hudson), have both dreamed of a wedding at a specific venue, the Plaza. When the time comes these best friends are turned against each other when their weddings are both booked for the same date. They then play pranks on each other to sabotage the other’s wedding and have the Plaza to them self. This movie is so bad it’s good. May the best bride win.
Grown Ups, 2010
After the unfortunate passing of their basketball coach, old friends (Adam Sandler, Kevin James and Chris Rock) reunite all together for the weekend, bringing along their wives, children and a dog without vocal cords. This is the perfect movie if you’re in need of a good laugh. If you happen to fall in love with this hilarious film I’d recommend watching the more recent, Grown Ups 2, as well.
White Chicks, 2004
Two FBI agent men, Marcus (Marlon Wayans) and Kevin Copeland (Shawn Wayans), ruin a past investigation and need to redeem themselves. They get put on a job watching twin sisters that are in danger of being kidnapped. When the girls realize what they’re doing and insist they leave, the agents disguise themselves as the girls and continued on the investigation. This movie is definitely a knee-slapper.
Annie, 1982
When an orphan girl, Annie (Aileen Quinn), is adopted for part time by the rich, Oliver “Daddy” Warbucks (Albert Finney) she ends up on a wild adventure. All Annie wants is to find her real parents, but she’s put in harm’s way when she tries to do so. If you haven’t seen the original Annie you’re really missing out.
The Princess Diaries, 2001
The shy and geeky teenage girl, Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway), is in for a real treat when she discovers that she is royalty and in line to be the queen. Before she can be crowned and take the throne she needs to learn the ways of royalty. She goes through the amusing “princess training” to get prepared. This is a great movie. Not to mention that there is a sequel to it.
Monsters University, 2013
Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) and Sulley (John Goodman) have dreamt of becoming “Scarers,” and to do so they need to attend college at Monsters University. They become involved in a rivalry and end up getting kicked out of school. The pressure is on them to figure out how to fix things. If you’ve seen the original Monsters Inc. you need to watch this film to see their characters’ back story. It’s an adorable movie and perfect for those days when there is nothing to do.
The Princess and the Frog, 2009
Tiana (Anika Noni Rose) has high hopes and dreams of opening up her very own restaurant in New Orleans. Things turn around for her when she meets a frog prince who needs her kiss to turn human, but when they kiss Tiana becomes a frog. They then seek a voodoo priestess to become human again. This movie definitely takes an entertaining spin on your typical princess movie.
