Missing seven days before semester ends stressful for freshman

Kimmie Knutson, Journalism I Staffer

Everybody has been absent from school at least once. And, as we all know, the makeup work for the next day is hell. For some of us it’s only a couple days of absences, but others have ranged from weeks to months. I, for example, was absent for exactly one week and two days. Everybody in my household was sick with either the flu or a stomach bug, so it was practically unavoidable, especially for me. I swear, I am always sick with something. I have more absences than the attendance office can count.

Anyways, the week before finals is when I got back. This meant that everybody was receiving reviews that made me cringe just looking at them. Over the time that I was sick, I wasn’t able to do any homework, so I also had to find a way to make that up. I had to take tests, do reviews, complete homework, write an essay, etc.

Pre-AP English, Pre-AP Biology, AP Human Geography, Algebra, French. Now, you may notice that I take three AP classes. This means that I had to make up a lot of homework. For English it wasn’t all that bad. All I had to do was write an essay and a short answer response. I’ve always loved English, so I didn’t have too much trouble with that. AP Human Geography was not as easy. I was almost behind on a whole unit of study. “The Mother of all study guides,” as Ms. Howard said, was due the week after Thanksgiving along with fifty notecards. Besides AP HUG, everything went okay. Biology was a breeze, Algebra was no big deal, and French was probably easiest of them all.

The biggest problem was that I was much unprepared for the finals the week after. My nerves were shot and I couldn’t sleep the nights before the tests from stress. I guess I probably could’ve found a way to study over the time that I was sick, so I blame myself for that, but I still wish that I could’ve had more time to make everything up in all of my core classes. It’s not always easy to make up work a week before Christmas break.
