How was your summer break?

Those five words were said to me over and over on the horrendous first day of school. I wait all year for the overanticipated moment when the bells ring on the last day of school, well knowing that I have to go back in two and a half months.

I don’t know about you, but the first day of school always turns me into a nervous wreck. It’s already nerve-racking enough to go back to the same school that you’re already used to with all the same kids that you know, but when you have to go to a brand new school with full grown adults it gets a lot scarier.

Throughout middle school I would fear just the thought of going into high school. I was always intimidated with the fact that there would be students with jobs, cars, and facial hair going to the same school as my 14-year old self.

When the time came in eighth grade to choose our courses for freshman year I was completely overwhelmed. Yet, I chose all of my classes and sent off the form hoping that I would have classes and lunches with my friends.

When the day finally came for me to go to my first day of High School, all I could think about was to not trip and fall down the stairs in front of all the cute boys because that’s definitely something I would do. I also just hoped I wouldn’t get lost and have to ask a senior for directions just for them to tell me that I need to go up the magical elevator that costs $20.

Once I sat down in my first class with some familiar faces and some new ones I realized it’s not that bad. I’m sure that everyone gets nervous for the first day of high school and I’m happy to say that I am a survivor of that day. Now that I think about it all the big embarrassing things I thought would go down on the first day weren’t even all that embarrassing, and now I’m happy to be a Rouse high school freshman.
