Musical muses

Music aficionado has wide range of artists she likes, doesn’t want to be judged for what she listens to

Haily Martindale, Journalism I Staffer

Music has defined this generation and many others before for centuries. Different genres of music are being discovered all of the time. Artists are testing the limits of music. So why are people still being judged or defined by what kind of music they listen to? Why are people so encased in just one category?

My music taste can go from Beyoncé to Twenty One Pilots in .001 seconds. People enclose themselves off to just one style when there are so many types of music they can be exploring. It completely defeats the purpose of music in general. Music was made to entertain people when needed and provide them with happiness. If you only listen to Justin Bieber, imagine all of the amazing songs you’re missing out on.

Stereotypes. A standardized conception. There are so many of these in the kind of music people listen to. If a girl listens to some boy band, then she is automatically some crazy fanatic that is obsessed and would shave her head just to go to one of their concerts. Although there are some like this, it’s completely invalid. If someone likes rap music, that means they are bad influences. Because that makes complete sense? The people who judge like this have nothing better to do with their lives.

Music tastes should not define who someone is, nor should people close themselves off to just one type of music. I encourage you to open up your Spotify, iHeart Radio, or any other music app your little heart desires. Start listening to things you’ve never heard of, or things you’ve always been curious about. You might be surprised with your results.
