High school is a chance to try various electives
April 10, 2016
One of the biggest problems that come with being a high schooler is the topic of what happens after we graduate our senior year. From the moment we step onto campus, we’re told from the start by many people that we have to start thinking about the future: what college we want to go to, what kind of career path we want for our future life, and so much more. With this in mind, it’s cause for concern that many students don’t really take the time to stop and enjoy their high school life, but instead are more worried about what they’re going to do in the future following their high school time.
I believe however that instead of coming to high school in order to find the path that best suits what we are to become years down the road, our time here is better spent broadening our horizons. During our time in high school, I think that it’s better to not bunker down on a single elective, or only focus on one core class, but instead try our hand at many different things in order to become more like a jack of all trades by the time we leave. Taking place in a sport one year, moving on to take an art class, or trying your hand at a few different speech classes (granted you get at least two of the same language to graduate), taking a dance class or taking the stage as an actor for a year. All of these things not only allow for you to become more adept but also allow for you to get to know all different kinds of people, and possibly find a place in which you really fit in.
After four years spent in various electives and different types of work, such as swimming, tech theatre, theatre direction, Spanish, journalism and newspaper, and creative writing I can say for sure that I’ve never really thought all that much to what I’m going to do or where I’m going after I graduate. Granted, this isn’t the best idea for everyone and I don’t recommend it, but I can say that I’ve enjoyed getting to do so many different things and meet many different kinds of people.
