The next Rachelle Ray, Gordon Ramsey or Bobby Flay just might be on campus.
The Lifetime Nutrition and Wellness class teaches students cooking basics and how to make healthy food choices. There are three classes taught by Haley Delvizis this year and next year, Culinary Prep will be offered, a class for students who want to have a job in the culinary arts.
“I like Mrs. Delvizis a lot because she helps me with everything,” junior Rehab Aly said. “I like working in groups to cook the recipes, which are all great and really tasty.”
In Lifetime Nutrition and Wellness, students learn about the food guide pyramid, exercise, digestion, metabolism, techniques, equipment and how to read recipes. Students cook through labs in order to practice what they learn in class.
“The kids definitely love cooking and eating the food the best,” Delvizis said.
Students will also cook a recipe that corresponds with each section of the food guide pyramid. This includes grains, vegetables, fruits, dairy and meats. Other recipes cooked by the three classes include Cheddar Bay biscuits, ratatouille, fried rice, fruit pizza and more.
“It’s exciting cooking things that you’ve never cooked before,” sophomore Gracie Seymour said. “I like trying new things I’ve never tasted before. It’s good experience and helps me for later in life.”
The Lifetime Nutrition and Wellness class benefits students because it prepares them for independence later in life, such as life in college. It also gives students who want to go on to the culinary prep class a basic foundation.
“It teaches students the very important lesson about nutrition and how to make healthy food decisions,” Delvizis said.
