Fourteen varsity wrestlers placed at the district meet, Feb. 5-6 at Delco Center. Of the 14, 10 placed in the top four of their weight class and qualified for the regional meet.

“I thought we wrestled extremely well,” coach Kevin Carter said. “We came off I think an average day on Friday, but we wrestled a really competitive day Saturday. We were fifth in the standings early on Friday and we were able to move up to third and eventually challenge for second and we came up a few points short, but overall Friday was a great day of wrestling.”

For the varsity girls, four wrestlers placed, including sophomore Alex Elias reaching the championship match in the 128 weight class. At 110, freshman Violet Hall took the bronze and will join Elias at regionals.

“The first day was great, I was 2-0,” Elias said. “The second day I struggled a little, but second place wasn’t too bad.”

On the varsity boys side, 10 wrestlers placed with three matching the championship match in their weight classes. Junior Noah Martinez finished second at 120, senior Cory Kirk was second at 138 and senior Jesse Moser placed second in the heavyweight division.

“My finals match was the toughest match because it was against someone I’ve lost to multiple times before,” Martinez said.

Four wrestlers won their final matches to finish third, including Joel Komorn, Dylan Rowling, Sam Huston and Sergio Garza in the 103, 160, 170 and 220 weight classes. For Komorn, this was his first year to wrestle at the varsity level. Rowling and Garza both won their final matches by pinning their opponents.

“It happened so fast, I mean I knew it was coming, he has beat me before and I thought about that and see what was going on in his next match because I knew I was going to rematch and I saw moves coming and I took him down and pinned him,” Garza said. “When I won, I was jumping with excitement and I was excited to know that I had out smarted him.”

In other weight classes, freshman Thomas Tolbert was fourth at 113, freshman Brian Foret was fifth at 132 and senior Brock Catchpool was fifth at 145. Tolbert will advance to regionals for the first time while Foret and Catchpool are regional alternates.

“It went pretty well and I was happy with myself because I got the overtime win,” Tolbert said.

The team travels to the regional meet at Cy-Fair High School in Houston, Feb. 12-13. The top four wrestlers in each weight class move onto state.

“This year it was the expectation to get into state,” Rowling said. “The past two years I was able to work hard enough to be able to get into state so this year it was kind of the norm.”
