Star Wars Summary

Not familiar with a galaxy far, far away? Here’s a refresher on what happened in the previous six movies. Spoiler alert! Major plot lines and events revealed.

Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace, 1999: The backstory of how Darth Vader became the face on an evil empire begins with Episode 1. We meet Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd) as a child, a slave who is eventually freed and is introduced to the world of the Jedi. We also meet a young Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) and Padme Amidala (Natalie Portman), a Senator from Naboo.

Episode 2 – Attack of the Clones, 2002: Ten years later, Anakin (Hayden Christensen) is a young Jedi who is powerful with the Force. He assigned to protect Senator Padme Amidala (Portman). The Jedi Knights struggle to keep peace as the Clone Wars stretch across the galaxy, and Obi-Wan and Yoda lead a massive army against them. Anakin discovers his mother was murdered by Sand people and he goes on a rampage, killing her murderers. Eventually, Anakin and Padme fall in love and secretly marry, foreshadowing events in the next installments.

 

SW2Episode 3 – Revenge of the Sith, 2005: Anakin (Christensen) and Obi-Wan (McGregor) lead a rescue of the Chancellor, with Anakin killing Count Dooku (Christopher Lee). Anakin returns home to his wife Padme (Portman) to learn she’s pregnant. Letting his fear consume him, Anakin betrays the Jedi Order. He loses his limbs in an epic battle with Obi-Wan and becomes Darth Vader. Padme dies after giving birth to Luke and Leia who are split up so Darth Vader can’t find them. The galaxy is eventually taken over by the Sith Lords, creating The Empire.

 

SW4Episode 4 – A New Hope, 1977: After years of rebels fighting the Empire, Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) is
captured by Darth Vader, who wants to know where the Rebels are. Luke (Mark Hamill), a farm boy from Tatooine buys her droids C3PO and R2D2. Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Obi-Wan (Alec Guinness) help Luke save Leia whose planet is destroyed by the Death Star. Hans and Luke go undercover as storm troopers and Darth Vader kills Obi-Wan. A space battle happens with the Death Star blown up by the Rebels.

 

Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back, 1980

Episode 5 – The Empire Strikes Back, 1980: The rebel base moves to a snow planet which Vader finds and attacks. Rebels escape and Luke (Hamill) goes to Degabah to train with master Yoda. Meanwhile, Leia, Han, Chewbacca and C3PO go to Cloud City to repair the Millennium Falcon. But they get captured and Hans gets frozen in cardenite and shipped off to Tatooine. Luke fights Vader. Vader chops off Luke’s hand, and reveals to Luke, “I am your Father.” Luke escapes.

 

Episode 6: Return of the Jedi, 1983
Episode 6: Return of the Jedi, 1983

Episode 6 – Return of the Jedi, 1983: The Empire is building a second, bigger Death Star. Luke and the Rebels rescue Han (Ford) and Leis (Fisher) who has been captured by Jabba the Hutt. Luke finds out Leia’s his sister. Yoda dies. The Rebels fight in space and on the nearby planet, but it’s a trap. Luke fights Vader, again. Luke chops off Vader’s hand, but spares his life so that he won’t go to the dark side. The Emperor attacks Luke and Vader protects his son while sacrificing his life in the process.
