Theatre prepping for musical
Guys and Dolls to have four performances in January
January 5, 2016
Theatre students will get in touch with their Eastern crap-shooting selves in the musical performance Guys and Dolls. Set in the mid-1900s, the show follows the stories of gambler Nathan Detroit as he struggles to find the money and a place to hold a craps game, and big time gambler Sky Masterson, a man pulled into an unbeatable bet with Detroit for the money he needs for his crap game.
“Sky Masterson is a very successful gambler who’s very smooth and is always getting the girls and what he wants,” senior Weston Bonnet said. “I feel like I got the perfect role because Sky’s very knowledgeable and he’s very witty and smart which is why he’s so successful, so it’s been an easy role for me to really fit into.”
Bonnet and Niko Bermea won’t only be struggling to win some of the biggest bets of their lives with all the other guys putting up their money. The girls will also be dealing with the two high-rollers in some high-stakes romance.
“Sarah is a Mission Girl who is very uptight but also has a very fun and awesome side to her that is very fun for me to play with,” senior Audrey Dickerson said. “I really like this musical because it has some really awesome and challenging musical numbers, not to mention our leads are very strong in this show.”
The technicians for Guys and Dolls will also have a tough challenge. The crew will create five different sets for scenes in completely different locations and will run around backstage as the actors dance across the stage in this fast-paced show.
“The first musical I ever designed props for in college was Guys and Dolls, so there’s a bit of nostalgia in this show for me, so I’m looking forward to seeing what we do differently,” technical director Holly Flannery said. “And we’ll be using many different technical theatre tricks to transport the audience to many different locations in this show.”
Guys and Dolls takes the stage Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 21-23 at 7 p.m. with an additional matinee on Sunday at 1 p.m. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the theatre website or at the door.
