Hip-Hop is on the verge of death. Many of the great ones are dead, old, no longer relevant, or any combination of the above. Many of the new faces are just embarrassingly horrible, greedy, or just centered on a specific target group. It’s a time where the music with mainstream appeal has absolutely no artistic value. It’s a time where a collective such as Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All could potentially take over, something that seems close to reality at this point in time. I’m not going to give too much detail about Odd Future, but I will say that almost all of their music up to this point in time has been released for free at their website, oddfuture.com.
This is the leading single from Tyler, the Creator’s forthcoming second album Goblin, which is set to be released in April. His first album, Bastard, was a promising look into the twisted minds of Odd Future, with lyrics that are disturbing their very tamest. Bastard’s only problem was its amateur sound, but that can be forgiven due to the fact that it was the first album by a member of Odd Future.
Yonkers is much better than his earlier work, but it still has the disturbing, dark atmosphere that made Odd Future recognizable. Tyler’s deep, brooding voice is a perfect fit for his lyrics that include everything from the murder of hipsters and Bruno Mars, to watching the television show, Adventure Time. It might not be much different from the main aspects, but the feeling as a whole is much better. This is the absolute best work by any of the members of Odd Future, and if this is the direction that the collective is going, then almost every contemporary hip-hop musician should just stop making music, because it’s going to take quite a lot of time to get anywhere near as good as this, especially considering that the majority of hip-hop musicians are just frighteningly awful.
