Cross Country back on the course
August 28, 2015
After going to state last year, the cross country team has practiced hard this summer to make it back. With their first meet Friday, Aug. 28, they’re ready to put all of those summer workouts to the test.
“Summer is one of the biggest part of our training because it is just about getting in base mileage and getting our fitness to a good level,” senior Nico Escobar said. “It’s been a great summer and our whole team has been putting a lot of effort so that hopefully we can come back and win district again.”
Last year the team hit several milestones, with both the varsity girls and boys winning district, and both teams advancing to regionals and state, all firsts for the school. The team appearances at state were a nice change for senior Madie Boreman, who has mostly been solely in state races. The senior has advanced to state every year of her high school career, including winning the 5A state title as a freshman.
“I want to have the best season yet,” Boreman said. “Not necessarily based on statistics, but based on how I personally think I do at races and how I feel during races.”
Both Boreman and Escobar are part of the senior heavy cross country team that includes Haley Timmons and Mitchell Ballis.
“It’s pretty cool being one of the leaders this year because when I was a freshman, I looked up to the leaders of the team,” Escobar said. “So it’s awesome to be on the other side of that relationship where people look up to you.”
The two runners are eager for the new season, especially since it is their last. They kick off the season, traveling to the Woodlands for the annual Friday Night Lights race.
“I don’t think I’ve realized that this is it,” Boreman said. “I’m excited to see what my last season has in store.”
