It’s all about perspective. Scratch that – it’s about being perceptive.

When six Replay staffers trekked to Texas A&M for Balfour’s yearbook camp in mid-July, they went in with a visual-inspired theme. But they left with an idea that was more cerebral.

“When the staff was brainstorming theme ideas in the spring, two staffers really loved the idea of getting students to look at Rouse in a different way,” adviser Kel Lemons said. “Their design was beautiful and blew the staff away. But I wasn’t really sold on the wording. ‘It’s all about perspective’ sounded a little cliché. So, they really thought about it at camp and came up with ‘Perceptive.’

The name switch allowed the staffers to still utilize some of the sidebar ideas to connect to the words “look” and “perspective,” but also add some graphic packages and headlines with a thinking concept.

“I really like the theme and I feel like it’s difference from anything we’ve ever done,” sophomore Chloe Hatfield said.

They also spent hours searching for a font that would really set the book apart and a strong visualization of the theme. The hard work paid off as the staff received an Award of Excellence trophy for Typography and Graphics.

“We tried to do something different with our 2015-2016 theme,” junior Jaci Chavera said. “When the students look back on this coming year, we want them to think about it differently.”

The six students, including two incoming staffers, spent four days in Aggieland, attending yearbook classes and living in the dorms. The met nightly during lab time with a mentor, Legacy adviser Leland Mallett, for advice and guidance on the spreads. They created a board of all of their theme and design ideas, creating 15 spreads for the upcoming yearbook.

“Camp was an experience I will never forget,” Chavera said. “There was a lot of work that went into those couple of days, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

The 2016 Replay will go on sale the first week of school with order forms sent home in the first day packet. Parents are encouraged to take advantage of the cheaper price which is only available through September.
