Music integral and sacred part of student’s life

One of the most real opinions I have ever heard was in the movie Perks of Being a Wallflower. I have such an appraisal for this book, to the point where it should be put in a glass container and kept safe for all eternity. At Kings where Sam, Charlie and Patrick went after Homecoming for food Patrick blurted out the line “I used to be cool before I heard good music.”

My movie abruptly paused and the incessant crunching from chips and salsa came to a halt while I just stared at the screen in disbelief. This has become my life. From being the popular kid with the sweet hair and Aeropostale T-shirts in sixth grade to someone who will spend his entire weekend in his room (music blasting) and playing guitar trying to figure what chords sound best for the song I am writing.

Music gives people a release, somewhere that you can feel safe and secure, provokes curiosity and captures and makes a moment pure and worth remembering. A new perspective on life evolves as your knowledge of music and underground bands does the same.

I need to be able to feel the same comfort and trust in that person before I tell them my favorite song.

I’ve been called a weirdo, geek, hipster and god from how people have interpreted my taste in underground alternative music. It can almost be compared to a religion. The reaction and progression of their taste of music all because of the spark that was set with the one song they heard from my little blue, cracked iPod Nano. Music has become so important to me; to the point where I have found the song that can summarize my emotions and make me feel better no matter where I am or what I am going through. My favorite song is something that only very few people know, because it brings a comfort that can’t be explained. I need to be able to feel the same comfort and trust in that person before I tell them my favorite song. In other words, my favorite song is the last thing you will ever know about me.

Call it what you want, but music brings people a profound sense of comfort and release. A place to get away from where you are. Not everybody can say that they have a sanctuary in the right-hand side pocket of their khakis. I’ll trust you when you hear my favorite song.
