Seniors Dylan and Zane Ritter won the district title in boys doubles at the 13-6A district tournament, April 9-10.

“I’m just proud they came through, it was pretty tight,” tennis coach Darin Bassett said. “It was pretty stressful watching everything go down. The third set was a breeze for the Ritters, they kicked it really into gear.”

The Ritters won all of their matches the first day of the tournament, including beating the No. 2 Westwood team in the semifinals. They faced the No. 1 Westwood team in the final, winning in three sets, 7-6, 3-6, 6-2.

“Pulling out the first set really set the tone of the match for us both,” senior Zane Ritter said. “I think the confidence Dylan and I pulled from that was one of the main reasons we won the match.”

After dropping the second set, they regrouped and broke Westwood’s serve several times to win the final set 6-2 and clinch the match. The district championship is a culmination of four years of playing as the school’s No. 1 doubles team.

“I think it has made a huge impact on the both of us as far as cherishing all the moments of success we have,” Dylan Ritter said. “Since this is the last time we will be able to compete in high school tennis we both want to make it the best year possible.”

In mixed doubles, seniors Adrian Montes and Ellie Mueller placed third. In the first day of competition, they beat McNeil 6-3, 6-2 in their first match, but lost to Westwood to move into the third place match. They defeated Hendrickson April 11 in two sets to finish third.

“We were confident that we were going to win, but at the same time we were nervous and just wanted to play our best and just give it our all,” senior Adrian Montes said. “That’s how we knew we were going to come out on top.”

The boys doubles will now compete at the regional tournament, April 19-20 in Waco. The mixed doubles team is the alternate to regionals.
