Seven Latin students placed at the Texas State Junior Classical League in Amarillo this past weekend. More than 60 Texas schools competed, and the Latin team finished ninth overall in the lower division.

“We did really really well,” sponsor Katie Cowhig said. “There were some really big schools who have been doing this since the ’70s and it’s hard to compete against them, but we did really well.”

Seven of the nine club members placed at the state contest. The seven placed in 11 events including Latin Grammar, Roman life and Decathlon.

“It’s funny because sometimes you think you’re going to do really good and then you get the test for doing whatever and then get to see other people’s stuff and you realize it’s horrible,” sophomore Nate Lunceford said. “Some people take the test that no one takes, so they know they’re going to place.”

The Latin Club members attended three meets during the year in preparation for state.

“I felt like I didn’t really expect [placing] to happen,” junior Larissa Yorgan said. “There was a lot of people.”

In addition, all nine students received recognition from the pentathlon, a test more than 1500 attendees too.
