The dentist office isn’t the most fun place to go. In my past experiences, it has led to removing teeth, filling in cavities and painful checkups. So when I turned 14 and my orthodontist wanted to put braces on it wasn’t the most thrilling idea and I wasn’t so far off either.
Getting braces hurt, beginning with the mouth guard that they use to keep you still, to the taste of glue in your mouth once they’re done putting them on. It was worth the pain once I was braces free, but it doesn’t end there. Retainers soon followed and that’s where the real issue began.
Most teenagers wear braces, but how many have to get them on again? Not many. Even in our busy schedule we still manage to remember to wear the retainer at night and some, wear it all day to make sure that their teeth don’t go back.
Lucky me, I get to wear braces again. Even after I wore my retainer and followed the steps. But once I had my wisdom teeth removed it hurt to open my mouth at all, much less wear a retainer, so I stopped wearing it for three weeks. How bad can it be? It’s only 3 weeks. I thought. Apparently, a lot can go wrong in just three weeks. Once I tried to wear it again it didn’t fit and my mom made an appointment. The staff tried so hard to make my teeth move back, but my teeth wouldn’t cooperate and their decision was to put the braces back on.
On Wednesday Jan 12, to be precise, was the day braces once again were placed in my mouth. Sitting in that chair again and looking up at the lights made me want to scream and change my mind. It was too late; she had already put them on and told me to rinse the glue out. “It will only be for a couple of months, no biggy,” Dr. Kunik, my orthodontist said.
It’s doesn’t feel like a long time and it’s not like I can’t eat all the things I like to eat. It’s just the simple fact that they’re on once again. Hopefully, I’ll be done this time.
