Despite the sudden appearance of the bitter Texas cold, 25 students braved the weather for Student Council’s annual trek to Camp Wannaleada.

Funded by the fall chocolate sales, StuCo traveled to T Bar M’s Camp Travis location at the end of January.

“Surprisingly, I think the low ropes with my team was my favorite part,” sophomore Ashtyn Thomas said. “I loved getting to know them better and working as a team.”

In small groups, the students participated in T Bar M Olympics and low ropes, group games involving logs and ropes. Hours before leaving, they were went on the high ropes, which includes zip lining, rock climbing and jumping off telephone poles while attached to a harness.

“I loved playing gaga ball with Mr. Graham,” senior Peter Jbeili said. “I learned that teachers are people too. We all step up the telephone pole the same way.”

All the fun activities were a way to help the students build confidence and learn how to effectively collaborate.

“I hadn’t been to camp before, but I heard it was a lot of fun,” junior Dustin Asbury said. “I learned to work together as a group effectively and I definitely plan on going again.”

StuCo sponsors the trip with the goal of connecting students and raising leaders in mind.

“Being a leader means your voice heard while still hearing the voices of other,” Thomas said. “I’ve been to camp twice before and I’d go again next year because it helps you grow as a leader.”
