The LISD Backpack Program has the opportunity to win $10,000 from Recognize Good’s Say Thanks Austin Program. The district’s ICAP programs fill bags weekly to give to needy students at district elementary schools.

“It’s nutritional food on the weekend for the families that are struggling in that area,” ICAP teacher Cathy McDaniel said.

Each high school donates to a different LISD elementary school, RHS sends their bags to Bagdad Elementary.  ICAP students pack the food, which helps because the students develop real job skills.

“It’s my favorite time of the week,” McDaniel said. “The ICAP students have real work to do, and it’s a way for them to give back to the community.”

Wiley Middle School’s registrar Karen Faulkner’s program, Student Charities, currently sponsors the LISD Backpack program.

The money from the Say Thanks Austin Campaign would fund the program for a year. Students and adults can vote for Faulkner through Twitter, Facebook, email, text and the internet. The voting deadline is Jan. 30. You can vote once a day through each method of voting.
