Senior Suede Mora won the varsity boys race at the Westlake Under the Lights at Del Valle, Friday, Oct. 10.

“I’ve been running for four years now and this is the first time I’ve ever placed first in a big meet,” Mora said. “All the work to build myself and the team up to this point has finally paid off.”

Mora finished in 15:51.27, seven seconds before the next runner, Austin Westlake’s Matthew Kearney. Freshman Danny Madrid finished third in just under 16 minutes. Three more runners finished in the top 20 – Mitchell Ballis took 16th, Nico Escobar was 18th and Daniel Guidry was 20th. The times helped the boys take first as a team.

Mora wasn’t the only one to place well at the meet. In the varsity girls’ race, junior Madie Boreman finished second in 18:15.68 and freshman Helen Roddy was third, 20 seconds behind Boreman.

“I didn’t feel my best at the meet,” Boreman said. “It was good for the team though because it allowed them to see the other teams we are going to compete against later on.”

Junior Haley Timmons also finished in the top 10, taking ninth in 19:13.41. Senior Savy Escobar was 27th while sophomore Sarah Warrenburg took 35th. The girls finished fourth as a team.

In the junior varsity races, freshman James Tisdale won the JV boys race in 17:34.63. Two other JV runners finished in the top 10, freshman Evan Rogers was 6th and sophomore Brandon King took 10th. The JV boys were third overall.

“It’s not much,” Tisdale said. “I’ve been racing since eight grade and competed at nationals, coming in first was a good accomplishment for me.”

For the JV girls, junior Alexis Alvarez was the top finisher, taking third in 21:35.38. The JV girls finished fourth overall.

This was the team’s last race before the team heads to district, Oct. 24.
