Secret Life

Secret Life of the American Teenager is rapidly growing in popularity in high school and sometimes even in middle schools. It’s a typical teenage story. Boy meets girl, girl gets pregnant, both the girl and the boy get tons of responsibility, and girl gets moody. Nothing special, just a teenage pregnancy story that has fake drama and always conveniently works out in the end.

The acting is decent, minus a few poor actors here and there. The plot is interesting enough to keep viewers entertained, but let’s be honest, it’s not very realistic. Nearly every person attending Amy’s high school is good looking, and there’s no snooty people wandering the halls. But the thing that I find really fake is the use of the word “sex”. It seems like they’re having a contest to see who can say the word “sex” the most in one hour. Kids are gross, raunchy, curse excessively, make jokes about inappropriate subject matter and say things like, “That’s what she said!” Nobody in my high school or in any of the high schools I know of, act like the cast of Secret Life.

There aren’t psycho counselors that hunt down a group of kids that skipped school for a day. There’s not that many people cheating on each other, or at least there shouldn’t be. And not everybody in high school has sex. Yes, it’s a popular subject to talk about, but believe it or not, a lot of the high school population doesn’t have sex on a regular basis.

The show has its ups and downs, and it could always be more realistic, but it is improving and it’s always entertaining to watch other people go through drama. Except for the times that I want to yell at the people on the TV because they’re being dumb, I agree with most of their decisions. It is definitely something I can look forward to on a dreary Monday.
