Senior Hallie Schwab placed second in the Fantasy category in Cosmetology at Skills USA State, April 21.

“I was really nervous going into it because this was a state competition,” Schwab said. “But I was super happy because there was better versions of my idea. I was the competition as a little intimidated. I was proud of myself.”

Schwab qualified after taking first at the district level. She turned her mannequin head into the Sleeping Beauty character Maleficent.

“It came on a whim,” Schwab said. “I was just messing around with the mannequin and I saw something I was doing. I just decided to make Maleficent.”

It took four hours for Schwab to create her mannequin. The hair dyeing took her an hour and a half.

“I used a ton of gel and a lot of hairspray,” Schwab said. “I dyed the hair which was from the mannequin I didn’t add any extensions. I did a lot of teasing and a full face make up on it. I didn’t use a lot of extras.”

Schwab is a subcampus student who attends Cosmetology at Leander.

“I’m just really proud that I got to participate because I didn’t get to participate as a junior,” Schwab said.

Hallie Schwab and Laurel May, who are both subcampus students, competed at SkillsUSA state.
