Halfway through the first round in district, the varsity girls basketball team has three wins under their belt.

They started off district strong with back to back wins over Stony Point and Hendrickson. They opened district at Stony Point, Dec. 11, winning by 10 points, 50-40. They followed it up with a 54-43 home win over Hendrickson, Dec. 18.

“District is pretty good, it really lets you push yourselves to do a lot better than any other time,” junior Zoe Homes said. “Since last year, we’ve really gotten the chance to improve and get closer, which has let us do a whole lot better this year compared to our one win last year; the team is really strong this year.”

After playing in a tournament during the Christmas break and winning five of the six games, the team returned to district play Jan. 2 with a 55-30 loss to Pflugerville. They dropped their next two games, a 62-44 loss to Westwood Jan. 5 and a 48-36 loss at Round Rock, Jan. 8.

“I think that there are very few games that we could have won, but we’ve had some very close games that were wins this year,” sophomore Taylor Douthitt said. “It’s definitely going a lot better than last year though and we’ve definitely gotten a lot closer together and we’re doing much better than we did last year.”

They wrapped up the first round of district with a 63-14 home win over McNeil, Jan. 12 and a 53-45 overtime loss at Cedar Ridge, Jan. 15. After the first round, the team was tied for fourth place.

“We have a really good chance to get to go to [playoffs] in my opinion,” senior Bailie Rogouski said. “I’ve learned to have confidence in the game and just go and play my heart out.”
