Now, I’m not much of a foodie. The most gourmet I can get is Taco Bell and Hot Pockets. But Gourdough’s Public House in Austin completely changed my mind. On the outside, it doesn’t appear to be much; just a large wooden shack in South Austin known for making doughnuts. Honestly, my expectations weren’t too high in the beginning. However, I got a good a vibe just from walking inside the restaurant, and the inside was a stark contrast to the monotonous outside: vibrant and exciting. But as soon as I saw the Country Clucker, a doughnut piled high with potatoes, fried chicken and creamed corn, it was love at first sight.

On top of the excellent food, there was also fantastic service. A friendly waitress greeted me with a smile and my drink glass was never empty. All of the tables were clean and the floors were spotless, even though there was heavy traffic inside the restaurant.

Now, the prices were a little expensive ($7-$12 for an entree), but it was most definitely worth it. Gourdough’s, which started as a trailer and became so popular that it opened a brick and mortar location, is also a place that everyone can enjoy, regardless of age. They have donut sandwiches, burgers and entrees, and of course desserts.

However, the pinnacle of my experience has to be the dessert; Oh. My. Gosh. It was the most fantastic dessert that I had ever eaten, and believe me when I tell you that that is not an overstatement. It was simple, but soooooo gooooood. It was only a doughnut stacked high with frosting and candied pecans, but it tasted like it had descended straight from heaven. Named the Southern Bell, it even included homemade pecan pie filling. I nearly cried when I had to leave. Due to the abundance of options on the menu, great atmosphere and fantastic food, I will most definitely be back sometime in the near future.
